2005-2006 Accompany detainees training project

In 2005, JRS-Europe designes and implements a training project directed at persons attending to the needs of asylum seekers and irregular migrants in detention centres. The two days of training take place in six countries:

  1. Bucharest, Romania (October 6 - 7, 2005)
  2. London, England (November 3 - 4, 2005)
  3. Brussels, Belgium (November 24 - 25, 2005)
  4. Valetta, Malta (December 6 - 7, 2005)
  5. Ljubljana, Slovenia (December 15 - 16, 2005)
  6. Rome, Italy (December 16 - 17, 2005)

It covers the following issues:

  • International and regional human rights and refugee/migration law and standards relating to asylum seekers in detention
  • Intercultural and interracial issues
  • Identification and response to psychosocial concerns of detainees

The training team is comprised of three external experts:  Ms Anna Maria Gallagher, JRS-International consultant and international refugee and migration lawyer; Ms Helen Ireland, coordinator of the U.K. Association for Visitors to Immigration Detainees/AVID (www.aviddetention.org.uk) and Mr Naboth Muchopa, Secretary of the Racial Justice Committee for the UK Methodist Church.

At the end of the project, the training team edits a manual for persons attending to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in detention. The manual is drafted while the training sessions were ongoing to ensure input from all participants.
